Sculpted by various artists (first, and foremost, Pablo Viggiano), the Doctor Doom Premium Format dates back to 2005 and was released with an edition size of only 500 pieces for the exclusive version and 1000 for the regular one. The dimensions are fairly small (35 x 28 cm, with a height of 36 cm), but the weight is truly remarkable (more than 11 kg). Like the Hulk Premium Format, this classic collectible is probably made of full resin and you can realize it right away: if you try to move it (believing, because of its size, to be able to do it quite easily), you literally stay glued on the spot! This statue is a real jewel, highly coveted by all collectors and characterized by really shocking market prices: along with the Grey Hulk, in fact, Doom is probably the most sought after piece in the whole Marvel catalogue of Sideshow! The character sits on a finely decorated throne in a pose as simple as regal: the elbows resting on the throne armrests and the hands overlapped almost at the chin level, really give a sensation of coolness and arrogant superiority. It is a sort of static and meditative pose, very appropriate to the character: Doom, in fact, is an undisputed lord of evil, careful and ingenious planner of crime, convinced (in his madness) to be not only the king of the small state of Latveria, but the ruler of the world. The tunic fabric matches perfectly the shape and green tonality of the original Comics. A rigid metal ring, sewn in the edge and in correspondence to the face, allows to mold the cap as you like. The details of the armor are awesome for realism and workmanship: everything looks like real metal and is colored in a superlative way. The exclusive version offers the additional presence of a pedestal and a finely worked cup. At a first glance, this might seem like an unimportant accessory, but, on the contrary, it enriches the piece in an extraordinary way, perfectly adapting to the superb aesthetics of the throne and completing the statue as a whole. The column has the appearance of bronze and shows a toungued serpent with a human face. The cup is rich of embellishments in relief and has a beautiful color, which makes it very similar to a gold chalice, vaguely resembling a piece of the Vatican Museums. However, the uncomparable charm of this statue (and the recognition of its above-average level) comes from the incredible throne which our hero sits on. Almost all decorations have a copper color: they are simply breathtaking and realized in an absolutely perfect way. Every detail is sculpted with a painstaking care: the figures adorning the two sides of the seat are completely different and their aesthetics have nothing short of phenomenal! The right side shows a woman with an angelic face, while the left exhibits a figure with a skull, as to depict the contrast between life and death. The bases of both columns are full of faces and friezes completely different from each other: every detail is simply unique and represents an exquisite add-on to the whole figure. The back is amazing: at the top center you can see a sort of round coat of arms with a skull, while in the middle a lot of symmetrical friezes are masterfully realized. Another coat of arms is located at the bottom and carved in relief, with the semblance of ivory, depicting a very elegant feminine figure with a snake at one side. Extraordinary additional decorations are also placed under the front armrests, probably representing some mythological figures. Note the wonderful coloring of the same armrests, and the few parts free from bronzed frills, which give the sensation of being made of true leather. There are no words: a throne really worthy of a King! The details on face are stunning too. In the very small parts that can be seen through the eyes openings, you can imagine the drama of a lacerated and misshapen body. The armor is sculpted divinely, with the top of nails located along the contours of eyes and mouth, the perfect metal grooves shaping the cheeks and forehead and the sharp profile of nose in the foreground. The menacing shape of the eyes gives the character a really deadly look, that chills the blood to each careless interlocutor! The judgment on this Premium Format is as much positive as expected. Even beyond any personal taste and fondness for the character, it is impossible not to recognize that the qualitative level of this Premium Format is far superior to most of the Marvel statues available on market and its crazy quotations are an indirect (and explicit) proof of that. In my own ranking list, I still identify the Hulk PF as the best statue of the Sideshow Marvel catalogue, but such an opinion is highly subjective and based on the particular features of that piece: in a general context, absolutely free of any frills, Hulk really reaches the absolute perfection, in terms of sculpt, emotional impact and fidelity to the Comics' character. The same perfection, however, can be recognized in this extraordinary collectible, although in the opposite context of aesthetics of decorations, attention to details, richness of elements and constructive complexity. It doesn't matter if you like the character or even if you are a fan of Marvel collectibles: this statue, in my humble opinion, is a true piece of art!
